Spring Season 2017

Beijing Spring 10’s Tournament, June 10th

The final weekend rugby for the Spring season pitted the four Beijing teams in a full day tournament. With our first match against the Ducks, it’s fair to say that we didn’t bring our game early in the morning and were thoroughly disappointed with a low scoring draw.

With the next match against the Devils we knew we had to pick ourselves up and adjust our game and play to our strengths – keeping the ball in hand, using our forward dominance to crash the ball forward before using our experienced midfield to punch holes. We did everything just mentioned and fought hard to hold on against a diehard Devils defence. The Aardvarks held on for a well deserved 15-14 victory and one hand on the trophy with one match to play.

The final match the Aardvarks showed their determination to be the Beijing champs and we dispatched of the Brothers with a dominant performance showing the skills learnt throughout the season. A complete performance and a showcase of just how much the Aardvarks wanted the victory.

A great way to end the season as Beijing 10’s CHAMPIONS!

Aardvarks vs Devils, May 20th

A week after travelling to Xiamen to compete in the Gulangyu Rugby 10’s, the Aardvarks had their second match-up against the Devils in what would be a huge clash. With the Devils taking the lead early on through a soft defensive lapse, it looked like being a long day for an Aardvarks team depleted through work commitments. Things picked up shortly after and using the wind to their advantage the Aardvarks scored twice to put them 12-5 up at half time. A strong first half by Dean Rawlings and Miele Koekemoer meant that the Aardvarks had the ascendency going into the break on a day getting close to 30C. The forwards were outplaying the opposition in the set piece and with plenty of ball in hand, the Aardvarks proved that they knew their way to the line.

The second half was not backed up so well with only a few reserves to call upon and a tiring pack the Aardvarks found themselves two points down with 5 minutes to go and pushing (too) hard to force the result ended up in a simple mistake to mean the team went down by 7 points on the final whistle. A great match and a sign of things to come for the Beijing Rugby Spring 10’s Tournament.

Aardvarks vs Brothers, May 6th

A disappointing rugby day when the Brothers failed to turn up with enough players. We played a 10’s match amongst ourselves and nothing to mention apart from Junior getting smashed by Tony.

Aardvarks vs Brothers, March 25th

The Aardvarks started this match with a plan to build on the effort from the week before and the first 10 minutes, we showed good intent and smart decision making although were unable to put points on the board. Tony Hare finished off a great backline move to open the scoring, followed by a try to Hugo from a lineout maul. Colin Coudray having his first start at fullback played well throughout the match and scored a try to take a 19-10 lead just before halftime.

A strong second half that threatened to get out of control with numerous counts of foul play by the frustrated opposition helped the win and Tyler Rudolph swept on a mistake to score. A strong platform created by the forwards let the midfield of Morgan Evans, Evan Wijaya and Tyler Rudolph create havoc for the opposition. This combination will be one to watch as the season progresses.

27-15 win

Tries: Colin Coudray, Tyler Rudolph, Hugo Pratt and Tony Hare

Conversions: Evan Wijaya (2). Penalties: Evan Wijaya (1)

Aardvarks vs Devils, March 18th

After a strong showing at pre-season training and some great new recruits, both Mu-Ditun and Aardvarks mens team played their first matches of the Beijing rugby Spring season.

For the Aardvarks men, we had a number of new combinations, but clear plans to play to our strengths in the backs. A poor first half where we repeatedly gave away ball through bad decision making put us under the pressure and we entered the half 20 points down.

Strong play in the forwards led by Marco Reyes, Gwendal Le Divechen, Kohei Toyama and Victor Bataille gave front foot ball to the backs where Morgan Evans, Evan Wijaya and Tyler Rudolph systematically spread and split the opposition defence. Three tries to Lachlan Rathbone and Michael Petrous (2) left the Aardvarks within seven points.

Tiring bodies and a number of changes to combinations meant that we failed to finish off the game, although plenty of positives can be taken out for the next match against the Brothers.

With over 25 Aardvarks getting a run, a number of player made their debuts and received their ties at rugby dinner where they were welcomed to the club according to Aardvark tradition.

39-19 loss

Tries: Lachlan Rathbone and Michael Petrous (2)

Conversions: Morgan Evans and Evan Wijaya
